What is Amazon Mechanical Turk?
Amazon Mechanical Turk is an Internet Marketplace that uses human intelligence tasks (HITs), to perform work that computers are unable to do.
*UPDATE* Amazon Mechanical Turk is no longer accepting workers from outside the United States.
How Does it Work?
You earn money by working on “HITs.” Hits are Human Intelligence Tasks. You choose an interesting task, complete it, and get paid for it.
Some HITs require qualifications such as pre-test or a certain level of experience. The tests are usually simple and you can work up to the qualification levels, if it is required. All tasks give you a time frame in which to complete the task from a few minutes, to a few hours, or more.
Cool Things About Amazon Mechanical Turk
- Variety of jobs to choose from.
- Jobs change, so boredom is not a factor.
- You can choose your own hours.
- You can choose the amount of work you want to do.
- Approved payments are guaranteed.
Not so Cool Things About Amazon Mechanical Turk
- Low pay.
- At times it may be hard to find a good job.
- The scammers. AMT needs to regulate their site more to weed them out.
- Navigating the site is a little difficult.
Amazon Mechanical Turk Worker Requirements:
- Create a “Worker Account.” (Sign in at the upper right hand corner of the website, and give your name, email, and create a password).
- Agree to the Mechanical Turk Participation Agreement.
- Your account will be reviewed, usually within 48 hours. You will then be sent an email.
- You are paid via your bank account or via an Amazon gift certificate. (For new workers, there is a 10 day holding period before you are paid).
- You need to provide a Tax Identification Number or Social Security Number. Note: If you do not have one of these 2 identification numbers, you will not be able to work on Amazon Mechanical Turk.
